Spit bite

The hard ground images here are inspired by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s print called ‘Eight Lines, Porthmeor ‘. She uses just eight lines to indicate the horizon, waves and the shoreline at Porthmeor Beach in Cornwall. I have used 7 lines and added spit bite (and, in the third image, chine colle). Once the hard lines were etched on these plates in the conventional way, strong acid was painted onto the plate (rather than putting the whole plate into an acid bath). This creates areas of tone and texture and the plates were then ‘dolly’ inked.
